Charter Appoints Time Warner Online Exec As New CEO

LONDON - The cable--and ISP--guy: Charter Communications, the cable television systems operator controlled by billionaire Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has brought in an exec from Time Warner's online side to be its new CEO.

Neil Smit, who was formerly responsible for AOL, CompuServe and Netscape ISP as president of Time Warner's (nyse: TWX - news - people )America Online Access business, replaces interim president and Chief Executive Robert May. "Neil is a proven, talented executive with the right combination of operational, marketing and customer service skills to lead Charter to the next level," Allen said in a statement. May was appointed interim CEO when cable industry veteran Carl Vogel quit in January with a year still to run on his contract.

Charter (nasdaq: CHTR - news - people ) has recently diversified into areas such as high-speed Internet and telephone service, but the company has toiled with heavy debt and is vulnerable to keener competition from satellite TV providers; it posted a loss $356 million for the second quarter, slightly narrower than its $416 million loss for the year-earlier period.
