Indeed.com Wins Best Job Search Site

Indeed.com took top honors among job search sites in a holiday poll over at Lifehacker. The straightforward search site ranked no. 1--Monster, Careerbuilder, LinkedIn, HotJobs and Craigslist rounded out the top six.
Lifehacker says of the site: "Indeed isn't a full-service job search site where you post your resume and hope for calls from employers, but if you know what kind of work you're looking for, its impressive meta-search (complete with email alerts and RSS feeds) is worth a look."

Indeed pulls listings from job sites, company sites, newspapers and associations. You'll be glad to know that Indeed reports "872,086 new jobs in the last 7 days."
The site may still be new to many job seekers, but it was launched in 2004. If you're curious about its ownership--"Indeed is privately held, with institutional investors including The New York Times Company, Allen & Company and Union Square Ventures," according to the site.

Siemens names new CEO of oil and gas arm

Siemens names new CEO of oil and gas arm

Siemens's energy sector division has appointed Thomas Blades as the new CEO of its oil and gas arm. Mr Blades will take over the new responsibility on January 1, 2009.

Mr Blades has held managerial posts in various companies in the oil and gas business previously.

He succeeds Frank Stieler, who successfully developed this business at Siemens since 2001. Mr Stieler is taking up a new post as board member at Hochtief, a construction company.

Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of the energy sector division of Siemens, said: "It is a pleasure to welcome such an experienced person to the management team. Thanks to his background, he can promote further expansion of our oil and gas business."


Allstate Financial names new CEO

Allstate Financial names new CEO

The Allstate Corp. has announced that George Ruebenson, president of Allstate Protection, will be named interim president and CEO of Allstate Financial.

The Northbrook, Ill.-based corporation said current president and CEO of the life insurance and annuities operation, James Hohmann, will leave the company, effective Jan. 5.

Ruebenson will assume the role as a search is conducted, according to Allstate. He has been with the company for 38 years, leading teams to achieve business results through difficult market conditions, the company said

Allstate Chairman, President and CEO Thomas J. Willson said he looks forward to working with Ruebenson “and the entire leadership team to ensure that Allstate Financial lives up to its full potential.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and honoured David A. Wouters, Managing Partner of InterSearch Japan, with an award for his contribution as ACCJ's longest serving member. The ACCJ is the largest foreign business group in Japan.

Many respected leaders from Japan's business community congratulated David upon reception of the award. In 1976 he set up the search firm Wouters & Associates, which became InterSearch Japan in 1991. David has edited several editions of the American Chamber of Commerce's Manual of Employment Practices in Japan, and a CCH publication, the Japan Employers' Handbook, which is used as an up-to date legal and business guide for the several thousand foreign businesses and government offices in Japan. How to Fight the New Recession

Here we go again: Another soft economy.

I learned a lot from the last two, so let me give you some quick ideas about how to fight back.

First, take a deep breath. If you're resilient, persistent and willing to make a few adjustments, you'll do just fine. You may not make as much money in a slow economy, but that's okay—you're in survival mode now.

I'm hoping you set aside some of your boom-market earnings for a rainy day, because that rainy day is here. If you didn't, you'll know to do so next time, since all markets are cyclical.

The good news is, you're still in business. Now is the time to dig in and gain market share as your competitors struggle. When things pick up—as they always do—you'll be great shape, ramped up and ready to prosper.

To prepare yourself for the immediate future, here's a preview of coming attractions, and how to deal with some new job-market realities.

1. Poor-quality candidates won't cut it. In a candidate-driven market, people with average or marginal skills are generally acceptable to employers. No more. From now on, you'll need to be much more selective, and associate yourself with a higher level of talent.
2. The 80/20 rule flips upside down. In a strong employment market, companies hire in duplicates. In other words, they'll fill multiple positions that require the same set of skills. So 80 percent of your placements can come from 20 percent of your clients. But in a weak economy, companies trim the fat and eliminate overlap, which means that your next 10 placements may very well come from 8 different clients, or even 8 different skill sets.
3. Waste not, want not. Now's the time to improve your presentation skills, learn new ways to handle objections and concerns, and close like there's no tomorrow. With fewer opportunities to make placements, you won't have the luxury to do sloppy work or let placements slip through your fingers.
4. Follow the money. Beating a dead horse is fine if you like the exercise. But if there's no pulse in your niche market or no demand for the skills that would normally define your desk specialty, be receptive to new opportunities—even if they take you into new or unfamiliar territory.

During the 1991-92 recession, I made the switch from filling mid-level engineering positions to filling sales and marketing jobs. In 2002, I switched my desk again, from sales to general management and director-level roles. Why? Because that's where the market took me.

I'm not suggesting you jump ship in the hopes of finding a pot of gold. But when times are tough, it makes sense to keep an open mind and add value wherever value is needed.

With over 16 years of experience in Greater China, Mr. Eymieu worked with leading multinationals and Asian conglomerates. Previously, Mr. Eymieu was managing partner of Heidrick & Struggles' Taiwan office, and in addition to his client responsibility, served as head of quality and innovation for the Asia Pacific region. Executive search firm Korn/Ferry International has added Jim Crawford to the firm’s Chicago office as a senior client partner in the global life sciences practice. Mr. Crawford brings more than two decades of management experience to the firm. He joins Korn/Ferry from the Deerfield, IL office of executive search firm Ken Clark International. Executive search and human capital providers Gabriel & James and Column Associates have agreed a joint venture to build a shared service centre combining their human capital research and delivery.

The joint venture, iTRAC Partners combines the research and thought leadership functions of Column and Gabriel & James to further strengthen their global executive recruitment and consulting ability.

In addition, iTRAC becomes the unified vehicle for their community of partners which already consists of internationally capable specialists in workforce management, payroll, leadership development, ATS/TMS software and employee screening.

Gabriel & James also confirmed today that it is transferring its small technology and Telecoms practice to Column Associates.
