CHICAGO, Jan. 12, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc. (Nasdaq:HSII), the world's premier executive search and leadership consulting firm, today announced that Srinivas Maddali and Masahiro Inoue have joined the firm's India and Japan offices as Principals in the Life Sciences Practice.

He started his career with Eli Lilly Ranbaxy in India and worked there for six years in roles of increasing responsibility in Sales and Marketing. Maddali completed his bachelor's in Pharmacy from Gulbarga University and has an MBA from the Management Development Institute Gurgaon.

Inoue, based in Tokyo, started his career in 1981 with Fuji Bank in Japan and was later assigned to its U.S. operation. While in the U.S., he joined The Monitor Company, a Massachusetts-based strategy consulting firm and engaged in global client cases to help build and execute strategies against Japanese competitors. After almost 10 years in the U.S., he came back to Japan and worked at W.R. Grace and later at AT&T, where he led new product launch projects for Asia and Japan markets, a business turnaround project, and a merger and acquisition project of a Tokyo Stock Exchange listed company. In 1999 he moved into the Life Sciences sector, first as Head of Bio-Science at Baxter and most recently as Head of Sales of the Primary Care Business Unit at Novartis. Inoue received a BA in law from Keio University and an MBA from Amos Tuck School of Dartmouth College.

Despite Economic Recession, Executive Jobs in Several Sectors expected to grow in 2009

According to data released today by the Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC) in its 2009 AESC Member Outlook report, several market sectors are expected to strengthen despite the state of the world economy. Search consultants anticipate executive job opportunities to increase in healthcare (32%), government (30%), pharmaceuticals/biotech (26%), and natural resources (26%). The AESC Outlook Survey was conducted from 5 to 30 December 2008.

While the overall outlook of search consultants for 2009 is negative, recruiting demand in several industries is expected to remain stable throughout the year, including non-profit (52%), education (48%), professional services (39%), media/entertainment (34%) and information technology (31%). AESC members surveyed expect the global executive job market to rebound in the second half of 2009.

The survey findings reveal that search consultants expect to see the greatest scarcity of talent in finance and accounting positions, as well as in executive management/board positions and engineering posts. Globally, China is expected to see the greatest need for executive talent in 2009 (66%), followed by India (43%), and Eastern Europe (30%).

Comparing this data to the last AESC Outlook report conducted in mid-2008, consultants continue to anticipate demand for executives in the natural resources and healthcare sectors, while they expect to see less demand for executives in manufacturing and professional services.

According to AESC President Peter Felix, “Despite the current state of the global economy, our members still see several bright spots for executive hiring in 2009. Other sectors will begin to step up their executive hiring as the current uncertainty dissipates and greater optimism begins to work its way into boardrooms. Typically executive search is an early indicator of renewed strength in the economy as organizations either upgrade or begin to invest in new executive talent. Given the extreme talent shortage which was being experienced in many sectors globally until the end of the third quarter last year our members are optimistic that strategic recruiting will pick up by the second half of the year.”

    For those CIOs who seek to serve, there are several ways to go about snagging a board position.

    Personal networks: Personal networks are the most common paths to board opportunities, according to the CIO Executive Council's board survey. Butch Leonardson, senior VP and CIO at credit union BECU, serves on two boards: his alma mater Seattle University and a regional medical center. In both cases, he was approached to serve via his personal connections.

    "Once you are on a board, your name is out there in annual reports and other collateral," Leonardson notes. "You become part of the 'board network,' which brings new opportunities with it."

    Executive search firms: IDP Education CIO Michelle Beveridge used an executive search firm to find her board appointment, a common practice in Australia where she is based. The search firm matched her with a paid director position for the Historical Queen Victoria Women's Center, a government body where she has served for nearly two years.

    CIOs who have had non-IT experience, particularly P&L management, are attractive recruiter candidates for board positions, says Kerry Moynihan, managing director at executive recruiter ZRG. He notes that the bad economic times may be a great chance for CIOs to nab board positions since companies are often more focused on operational efficiency and may see a CIO's experience with process optimization as suited to that need.
