Dave Way, managing director of accountancy and financial services recruiter, comments on the government’s spending review

Dave Way, managing director of accountancy and financial services recruiter, comments on the government’s spending review:

“The public sector is shrinking, but these cuts are crucial to reducing the deficit and ultimately providing the right conditions for Britain’s private sector to pick up the slack and restore strength to the economy. Without these austerity measures we may have seen damage done to the UK’s sovereign credit rating. The UK's financial services and its connected sectors, which are responsible for over 1 million employed and around 14% of the country’s GDP, depend on our global reputation as a stable and growing economy.

“However, while providing the right economic conditions for financial services to invest, the government should be wary of pushing business away through excessive regulation and prohibitive tax measures. Banks are already starting to report reduced profits and to reduce the UK’s competitiveness as an international financial and business centre would cause long-term damage to the country’s economic standing. The levy announced today, and £900m invested in efforts to combat tax avoidance and evasion, seems reasonable but it is vital that this is not a sign of populist punishment of the sector yet to come. The government must be very careful in its biting of the hand that feeds it.”

Boston, Mass., October 20, 2010
–Polachi, a provider of Access Executive Search™ services to technology, clean technology/energy, private equity and venture capital companies, attended the annual Access Search Partners™(ASP) conference in London, England September 23-24. ASP is the largest technology and clean tech/energy search partnership in the world with over 80 full-time team members, twelve global offices and over 3,000 successfully completed executive searches.  As a global network, ASP is able to deliver the constant partner-level attention and personal service found at smaller independent firms.

The firms, including Polachi in Boston, Schweichler Price & Partners in Silicon Valley, Stonewood Group in Canada,Braithwaite Steiner Pretty in Asia, and Gillamor Stephens in the UK, came together for the annual conference September 23-24, at the offices of Gillamor Stephens in London, England. Eighteen consultants from these global firms developed a new framework for sharing candidate information to help clients quickly close searches with high quality candidates.

The focus of the conference was on how to improve collaboration between these five firms to better serve their clients and to develop enhanced access into each other’s databases.  The firms also discussed the impact of social media – LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. – and how it can be used successfully in the search business.  Each firm shared their best practices in search for others to evaluate and possibly adopt as a new technique.

Nancy Garrison Jenn, author, consultant and global authority on headhunters, met with the group and discussed what clients are looking for in a search firm and how ASP can better serve clients in a competitive search landscape. Nancy pointed out that ASP has tremendous potential for growth as it is the only global search firm focused exclusively on technology and clean tech/energy.  Colin Tenwick, CEO and Founder of the CT Partnership Ltd in the UK, also met with the group.  Tenwick spoke about entrepreneurship in Europe.

According to Charley Polachi, Founding Partner of Polachi, “This year’s conference was extremely helpful and productive. When these five firms come together, it creates a unique environment where we can all learn from each other and collaborate on techniques that promote the most effective executive searches.  The conference always opens up a constructive discussion on how to improve and best serve our clients.”

Commenting on the government’s creation of a green investment bank, Zoe Bennett, head of Kinsey Allen Cleantech, said

“The cleantech sector is forging ahead in size and strength. More and more investors are piling in as businesses and industries grow confident of the returns available from green business and it’s encouraging that the government is seeing the opportunities in the cleantech sector as well. This growth will not only have a positive impact on the environment, it will also boost the number of jobs in the sector. We have forecast private equity investment in the UK cleantech sector to rise from £166m in 2010 to £325m in 2011. Analysis of the Californian cleantech sector has shown that for every £64m invested in the industry, 2,700 jobs are created. Applying this model to the UK the sector can expect job growth in the region of 13,000 in 2011. Not only will larger sums of money pumped into cleantech companies and projects mean more jobs on the technical side but demand for talented business focussed individuals will increase further to ensure these investments pay.”
